Islamic tradition of giving reverence to the elders and the pious

In the Name of Allah Most Merciful Most Beneficent

Muslims in the traditional Islamic way (Ahlu Sunna Wal Jamah wa Soofiya) are trained to be humble and respectful to their elders and pious Muslim scholars. And Islam allows acts of reverence to the pious and elders, such as kissing hands and feet of the pious. However, some misguided sects among Muslims slander and attack traditional Muslims for showing such reverence, they say Sufis who are the traditional Sunni Muslims committing Shirk (polytheism) by revering holy ones!

What is shirk? To commit an act of worship to anyone other than Allah is Shirk, if that action is permitted only for ALLAH, such as five times ritual Prayers, our own life (as the statement in the Quran 6:162 says that our life and death must be for Allah)!. Do the misguided sects believe Allah Almighty has hand and feet and kissing others hand and feet is shirk then?!

Below Hadiths refutes such misguided sects and their scholars!.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar (R.A) : Ibn Umar (R.A) told a story and said: We then came near the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and kissed his hand. (Sunan Abu Dawud Book 41, Hadith 5204)

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin (R.A): I never saw anyone more like the Apostle of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in respect of gravity, calm deportment, pleasant disposition - according to al-Hasan's version: in respect of talk and speech. Al-Hasan did not mention gravity, calm deportment, pleasant disposition - than Fatimah, may Allah honour her face. When she came to visit him (the Prophet) he got up to (welcome) her, took her by the hand, kissed her and made her sit where he was sitting; and when he went to visit her, she got up to (welcome) him, took him by the hand, kissed him, and made him sit where she was sitting. (Sunan Abu Dawood , Book 41, Hadith 5198)

Below are the References from Imam Bukhari’s Book of Islamic Morals and Manners (Adab Al Mufrad)

A Warning about those who accuse Muslims shirk (Polytheism) for “Kissing hands and feet”.

Also, some misguided sects make out that Muslims making prostration to Pious Scholars, when the intention is to kiss their feet for “RESPECT” NOT FOR “Worship”!

Wazi Ibn Amir said: “We approached [Madinah] and we we were told: “This is the Messenger of Allah, upon him be peace, we took his arms and legs and kissed him all over”. (Adab Al Mufrad 978) (This Hacdith is also related by Abu Dawud)

Suhayb said: “I saw Ali kissing had and feel of Al Abbas” (Adab Al Mufrad 979)

This are the views of the true “Ahlul Hadith” (People of Hadith) and true salaf salih (followers of the pious predecessors) , so it is time to forsake false salafis and false ahlul hadith!

Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever does not show mercy to our young ones, or acknowledge the rights of our elders, is not one of us.”  Musnad Aḥmad 7033

So the false sects and creeds accuse shirk on the traditional Muslims for kissing their hands and feet and showing respect.  Because the followers of this sects do not have proper manners and morals as a consequence they have been strayed from the path of those who are blessed by Allah Almighty!

Quran 1:7  The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.

So we can see that showing reverence and  kissing and feet of the pious is a virtuous act of those who are favored by Allah Almighty.

We can also understand that those who say this acts are shirk and bidha (polytheism and innovation) are those who evoked Allah's anger and who are astray!.

So whom do you want to follow?

The group that honour and revere the elders and the pious ?

or thee group that say such acts are shirk and bidha?

Make up your mind before it is too late for you!

Because it is said: On the authority of Abu Sa`eed al-Khudree (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say, “Whosoever of you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then [let him change it] with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith.” [Muslim]
